Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Ačaṙyan rejects the proposals to link with եղար (ełar, lamentation) and leaves the origin open. According to Pokorny, inherited from the Proto-Indo-European root *el-, *ol- (to destroy). This is accepted by Ałayan and J̌ahukyan.
