Etymology[edit]

A Classical Syriac borrowing. Compare Syriac ܩܠܦܐ (qəlāfāʼ, sheet of a book), ܩܠܦ (qəlaf, to remove the skin, bark), ܩܠܦܬܐ (qəlāftāʼ, husk, scale, shell). The word is of native Semitic origin: compare Arabic قلف (qilf, bark), Hebrew קלף (qelef, rind, peel) . Another rendering of the word has survived in dialects as կլեպ (klep).
