Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Dialectal reflex of Old Armenian կայանամ (kayanam). Part of the conjugation is derived from Old Armenian կամ (kam).

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

կենալ (kenal) (archaic or Western Armenian)

  1. to stand, be standing
  2. to stop, come to stop; to pause
  3. to remain in some place or in some condition
  4. to wait
  5. to live, reside

Usage notes[edit]

Nowadays, in Eastern Armenian, this verb is not used independently except in the infinitive and imperative. The other forms appear as part of the compound verb վեր կենալ (ver kenal, to get up) and few others, such as անց կենալ (ancʻ kenal, to pass). Excepting վեր կենալ (ver kenal), these compounds are rarely used.
