הֵטִיל (hetíl) third-singular masculine past (hif'il construction, passive counterpart הוטל / הֻטַּל)

  1. to toss, throw
    • Tanach, Jonah 1:4, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:
      וַיהוָה הֵטִיל רוּחַ גְּדוֹלָה אֶל הַיָּם וַיְהִי סַעַר גָּדוֹל בַּיָּם וְהָאֳנִיָּה חִשְּׁבָה לְהִשָּׁבֵר
      Va-ADONAI hetíl rúaḥ g'doláh el ha-yam va-yhi sá'ar gadól ba-yam v-ha-oniyáh ḥishvá l-hishaber.
      But the LORD hurled a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
  2. to pour
    • a. 217 C.E., Mishnah, Tohorot 3:3:
      אָמַר רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא, לֹא אָמְרוּ מַטִּילִין, אֶלָּא מַטִּיל.
      Amár Rábi Akíva, lo amrú matilín ela matíl.
      Said Rabbi Akiva, they did not say they pour, but rather one pours.
  1. to lay (an egg)
    • a. 500 C.E., Babylonian Talmud, Bechorot 7b:
      דָּג טָמֵא מַשְׁרִיץ, דָּג טָהוֹר מֵטִיל בֵּיצִים.
      Dag taméi mashrítz, dag tahór metíl beitzím.
      An impure fish spawns, a pure fish lays eggs.
  2. to impose
    • a. 500 C.E., Babylonian Talmud, Gittin 56a:
      אָמַר לְהוֹ רַבִּי זְכַרְיָה יֹאמְרוּ מֵטִיל מוּם בַּקֳּדָשִׁים יֵהָרֵג
      Amár le-ho Rábi Zekhariyáh: Yomrú metíl mum ba-kodashím yeharég!
      Rabbi Zechariah said to them, They will say one who imposes a blemish on a sacrificial animal is to be killed!
