Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Aramaic שְׁיׇיפָא / ܫܝܵܦܼܵܐ (šəyāp̄ā, salve), from the root שׁ־ו־ף / ܫ-ܘ-ܦ (š-w-p) related to rubbing, cognate to the Arabic root ش و ف (š-w-f).
