From Proto-Tai *paːꟲ (parent's older sister). Cognate with Lao ປ້າ (), ᦔᦱᧉ (ṗaa²), Shan ပႃႈ (pāa), Tai Dam ꪜ꫁ꪱ, Ahom 𑜆𑜡 (), Zhuang baj, Saek ป̂า.
