Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *sór-mos (compare Old Armenian որմ (orm, wall, fence)), from *ser- (to bind). Cognate with Ancient Greek εἴρω (eírō, I tie, fasten), Latin serō (I bind), Proto-Germanic *sarwą (armour).
