Etymology[edit]

Ca. 1800, from Bavarian and Alemannic German dialects. By surface analysis, ein (one) +‎ Baum (tree). Perhaps backformed from the adjective *einbäumig, *einbäumen (made of one tree) attested in Old High German einboumig, Middle Low German ênbômen, Old English ānbȳme.
