Help:Requests for verification

The verification process exists to ensure that Wiktionary does not broadcast incorrect information. If you doubt the accuracy of a definition, or the existence of a word, this is the place to bring it up.

Starting an RFV

1. Add {{rfv}} to the page, or {{rfv-sense}} to a particular sense.
2. Click on the '+' button, and save a new section on WT:RFV.

Finding citations

Online, there are a few places to look, notable http://books.google.com, http://groups.google.com. Any usage of the term can be added to the entry (using {{quote-book}} et.al.), or to its Citations page (using {{cite-book}} et.al.). Do not add cites to the RFV discussion.

Closing an RFV

An RFV may be failed after a month of failure to find citations, though leniancy may be necessary in some cases.

Failure

When, despite all efforts, no usage can be found. The word does not exist.

1. Delete the sense from the page, or the entire page.
2. Strike the heading to give == <s>[[:word]]</s> ==
3. Add a comment that starts with an emboldened word, either: Failed or Deleted.

Success

Applies when three cites have been found, proving the word exists as WT:CFI.

1. Remove the {{rfv}} or {{rfv-sense}} from the page.
2. Strike the heading to give == <s>[[:word]]</s> ==
3. Add a comment that starts with an emboldend word, either: Cited or Passed.

Other

Applies if the discussion is closed as further cite seeking is pointless even though it doesn't pass or fail yet.

1. Take the most appropriate action from the two above sections
2. Strike the heading to give == <s>[[:word]]</s> ==
3. Add a comment that starts with an emboldened word, either: Struck or Archive.

After some time, a bot will come to archive the section to the word's talk page.
