From Old High German mānōd (compare Old Saxon mānoth), from Proto-Germanic *mēnōþs, from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s (“moon, month”). See also Mond. Compare Dutch maand, English month, Danish måned.
