juvenile dentention centre

I was going to move this to juvenile detention centre, but to my horror I discovered that "juvenile dentention centre" gets more than 240,000 raw Google hits and that there seem to be "dentention centres" all around the US. On the other hand the word "dentention" is not to be found in Onelook. What's going on? Is this a new spelling or should it be made a common misspelling of -page? --Hekaheka (talk) 05:16, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Do Not Want. I mean, if you get sent there, you are not only being imprisoned, you are not only in the Arizona desert, but you will be under the care of people who don't know how to spell the name of what they run. • Google seems to make an effort to figure out what you should have meant. At the very least you have to enclose a phrase in quotation marks and look carefully at the messages at the top of the search results. When I searched for "juvenile dentention center" Goggle returned results for "juvenile detention center" (1,025,000 raw hits), but gave me the option of searching for "juvenile dentention center" instead (4,350 raw hits). Yup, I know that. "juvenile dentention center" gave same 4,350 hits to me as well, but also your Google probably gives 240,000 hits to "juvenile dentention centre". --Hekaheka (talk) 12:13, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

The Google count of its own results cannot be trusted, it has not actually retrieved any more results than are shown on the first page or so and the total number is a wild guess. You have to page through to the last page of actual results to find the true number which in this case is 53. If the results for Aoc-Cochise County Juvenile Dentention Centre are excluded, an error that seems to have been copied from website ot website, there are only 24 results. Restricting the search to durably archived material on gbooks then there is only one result. SpinningSpark 20:59, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

It's rather odd to see a non-US spelling of center used for the name of an Arizona facility. In US usage, the centre spelling is normally a sign that someone is trying to give the image of being sophisticated or posh- two adjectives rarely associated with Arizona correctional facilities. For what it's worth, there are more Google Books hits for dentention center, since juvenile detention centers/centres seem to be mostly called other things outside the US.

The occurrence of this typo is easily explained by the brain's tendency to simplify things by making similar sequences more alike. Chuck Entz (talk) 05:07, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

It's just as common with other uses of detention, but most of the Google Books hits I checked had the normal spelling elsewhere on the same page (in one case, it was only in Google's OCR, but not visible on the page image itself). Given that searches invariably ask "Did you mean detention...", I don't see the point in giving an obvious typo alternative form status. Chuck Entz (talk) 19:38, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
