Etymology[edit]

Compound of Wasser (water) +‎ Stoff (substance). A calque from French hydrogène which is itself a compound modelled after Ancient Greek ὕδωρ (húdōr, water) + γεννάω (gennáō, I bring forth). Compare Dutch waterstof and Polish wodór.
