Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese achãar, from Late Latin applānāre (to flatten), from plānus.[1][2] Doublet of aplanar.

Compare Galician achaiar and Spanish allanar. By surface analysis, a- +‎ chão +‎ -ar.[3][4]
