From Old Galician-Portuguese calcannar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from calcaño +‎ -ar. Alternatively form Vulgar Latin *calcaneare. Cognate with Portuguese calcanhar.

From the archaic or dialectal calcaño, itself from Latin calcāneum, or less likely from a Vulgar Latin *calcaneāre. Compare Portuguese calcanhar. Cf. also the learned borrowing calcáneo.
