From a rhizotonic variant of Old Catalan doler, from Latin dolēre, from Proto-Italic *doleō (hurt, cause pain), from Proto-Indo-European *dolh₁éyeti (divide), from *delh₁- (cut). First attested in the 14th century.[1]
