Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unclear. May be from Middle Dutch dutten (to rage), through the semantic development: “rage” → “be out of one's mind” → “be unconscious” → “doze”, possibly ultimately from Proto-Germanic *þeutaną (to roar, howl).
