Etymology[edit]

From New Latin encyclopaedia, a false rendering of Ancient Greek ἔγκυκλος (énkuklos, circular), from ἐν (en, in) + κύκλος (kúklos , circle), + παιδεία (paideía, educaiton, literally rearing of a child), as “an all-around education”, but literally “training in a circle”. The modern sense was first applied to the French Encyclopédie in the 17th century.
