Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from New Latin encyclopaedia, a false rendering of Ancient Greek ἔγκυκλος (énkuklos, circular) (from ἐν (en, in) + κύκλος (kúklos, circle)) + παιδεία (paideía, education, literally rearing of a child), as "an all-around education", but literally "training in a circle". The modern sense was first applied to the French Encyclopédie in the 17th century.
