Etymology [edit]
From New Latin encyclopaedia, a false rendering of Ancient Greek ἔγκυκλος (enkuklos, “circular”), from ἐν (en, “in”) + κύκλος (kuklos, “circle”), + παιδεία (paideia, “educaiton”, literally “rearing of a child”), as “an all-around education”, but literally “training in a circle”. The modern sense was first applied to the French Encyclopédie in the 17th century.
