From Proto-Balto-Slavic *garā́ˀ (“mountain”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerH- (“to elevate”). Cognate with Lithuanian girià (“primeval forest”), Latvian dziŗa (“woods”), dzire, Old Prussian garian (“tree”).[1][2]
