From Middle English, from Old English hænep, from Proto-Germanic *hanapiz (compare Dutch hennep, German Hanf, Danish hamp), borrowed from Scytho-Sarmatian (compare Persian کنب (kanab), Ossetian gän), itself a compound of Finno-Ugrian *kéne, 'hemp', and *piš, 'to burn; nettle' (compare Hungarian kender, 'hemp', and peszeg, 'to burn'). See cannabis.
