Ultimately from Persian قبا (qabā, kabā, coat), via Byzantine Greek καβάδης (kabádēs) (whence also dialectal Bulgarian кавад (kavad), Serbo-Croatian кавад/kavad). Compare Russian кабат (kabat), Belorussian кабат (kabat) and Ukrainian кабат (kabat).
