From Middle English nevew, neveu (nephew, grandson), from Old French neveu (nephew, grandson), from Latin nepōtem, accusative of nepōs (nephew, grandson), from Proto-Indo-European *nepot- (grandchild, sister's son). Cognate with Old English nefa (nephew, grandson). More at neve.
