Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *noustak, with an irregular change of n -> t, most likely due to the influence of some grammatical element or affix beginning with t-, for example the -da infinitive: *nous-ta > tõus-ta. Cognates include Finnish nousta, Ingrian noissa, Karelian noussa, Livonian nūzõ, Veps nousta, Votic nõissõ, nõisõ, and Võro nõsõma.
