Estonian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *tohtidak, from Proto-Finno-Permic *tošte-. Possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰers-, in which case it would be distantly related to English dare. Cognate with Finnish tohtia.

tohtima (da-infinitive tohtida)

  1. to be allowed to
    Ma ei tohi tulla.
    I'm not allowed to come.
