From Proto-Indo-European *terkʷ- (“to turn”). Cognates include Ancient Greek τρέπω (trépo), Sanskrit तर्कु (tarku), Hittite 𒋻𒆪𒉿𒀭𒍣 (tarkuwanzi) and Old Church Slavonic тракъ (trakŭ).
