From Proto-Tai *qraj (egg). Cognate with Thai ไข่ (kài), Northern Thai ᨡᩱ᩵ (khai), Lao ໄຂ່ (khai), Tai Dam ꪼꪎ꪿, ᦺᦃᧈ (ẋay¹), Shan ၶႆႇ (khài), Khamti ၵဲ, Ahom 𑜁𑜩 (khay), Bouyei jais, Zhuang gyaeq. Compare Sui geis (egg) and Southern Kam geiv (egg).
