From Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (h-i-du-u-š /⁠hindūš⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *hínduš, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *síndʰuš (river) or from Sanskrit सिन्धु (sindhu, a river, stream).
