According to Watkins, related to Arabic مات (māt, to die).[1] However, compare Sanskrit मात (māta, traversed, measured across), past participle of मा () (verbal root), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mimáHti, *mimHati, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁-; see मिमीते (mimīte, to mark off).[2]
