Etymology 1[edit]

From a merger of Proto-Tai *ʔaːᴬ (father's younger sister) and Proto-Tai *ʔaːwᴬ (father's younger brother) (hence the form อาว). Cognate with Lao ອາ (ʼā), Tày a.
