Japanese[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

Compound of とき (toki) + めく (-meku, looking like, behaving like, becoming like, verb-forming suffix).[1][2][3] The derivation of the toki element is unclear. It might be cognate with the doki element in adverb どきどき (dokidoki, throbbingly, beatingly, poundingly) in reference to one's heart.

Conjugation[edit]

Etymology 2[edit]

Compound of (とき) (toki, time, in the sense of “one's time, one's moment”) + めく (-meku, looking like, behaving like, becoming like, verb-forming suffix).[1][2][3] Compare English every dog has its day.
