Cognate with (OC *kreŋ, “to be afraid; to scare”) (Schuessler, 2007); the sense "to be on guard" is the endoactive of (OC *kreŋ). See there for more.

(OC *kreŋʔ, *ɡreŋs, “to warn; to guard against”) is the same word.
