(deprecated template usage) From Middle Irish éirgid (compare Scottish Gaelic èirich, Manx irree), from Old Irish at·reig (“rise”), from Proto-Celtic *regeti (“to stretch, straighten”), form Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (“to straighten”).
