French

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Latin emergere.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /e.mɛʁ.ʒe/
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

[edit]

émerger

  1. to arrive at the top; to move upwards
  2. emerge (to come into view)
  3. (colloquial) to wake up

Conjugation

[edit]

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written émerge- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
