Inherited from Proto-Slavic *smьjàti (stem *směj-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *smejetei, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)méy-e-ti, from *(s)mey- (“to laugh, be glad”). Cognate to Latvian smieties and Sanskrit स्मयते (smáyate).
