From Proto-Baltic *žírˀnjas, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źírˀna, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵr̥h₂nóm. Compare Latvian zirnis, Old Prussian syrne, Russian зерно́ (zernó), Persian خرمن (xarman), English corn, Italian grano.
