From Proto-Balto-Slavic *źirnja-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵr̥h₂nóm. Compare Latvian zirnis, Old Prussian syrne[1], Russian зерно́ ‎(zernó), Persian خرمن ‎(xarman), English corn, Italian grano.
