Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)

Symbol[edit]

ʟ

  1. (IPA) a velar lateral approximant.
(superscript ⟨ᶫ⟩) [ʟ]-release of a plosive, sometimes implying an affricate; [ʟ]-coloring or a weak, fleeting or epenthetic [ʟ].
  2. (UPA) devoiced alveolar lateral approximant (IPA [l̥]).
  3. (Boas transcription) a lateral affricate (IPA [t͡ɬ])

Usage notes[edit]

The implication that the superscript indicates an affricate when it appears after another consonant is especially strong when it is written ⟨ᶫ̥⟩ (with a voiceless base letter), as the proper lateral-fricative letters 𝼄 and 𐞜 were only made official in 2015; or when written ⟨ᶫ̝⟩ with a voiced base letter.
