Translingual

[edit]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA:(file)

Symbol

[edit]

ʟ

  1. (IPA) a velar lateral approximant.
  2. (superscript ⟨ᶫ⟩, IPA) [ʟ]-release of a plosive (e.g. [ɡᶫ], sometimes implying an affricate [ɡ͡ʟ̝]); [ʟ]-coloring; or a weak, fleeting or epenthetic [ʟ].
  3. (UPA) a voiceless l sound (IPA [l̥]).
  4. (Boas transcription) a lateral affricate (IPA [t͡ɬ])

Usage notes

[edit]

The implication that the superscript indicates an affricate when it appears after another consonant is especially strong when it is written ⟨ᶫ̥⟩ (with a voiceless base letter), as the proper lateral-fricative letters 𝼄 and 𐞜 were only made official in 2015; or when written ⟨ᶫ̝⟩ with a voiced base letter.
