Etymology

From Proto-Oceanic *kafu (to cover, to put on clothing) (compare with Maori kahu, Samoan ʻafu, Tongan kafu), from Proto-Oceanic *kaput (to wrap, to cover), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kaput (to tie or clasp together).[1][2][3]
