[edit]From Ancient Greek αὐτοκίνητος (autokínētos, “self-moved”), from αὐτός (autós, “self”) + κινητός (kinētós, “moved”), from κινοῦμαι (kinoûmai), middle of κῑνέω (kīnéō, “set in motion, move”). Calque of French automobile.
