Etymology

[edit]

Under the assumption of an original meaning 'split', this word was connected with δαιδάλλω (daidállō, to adorn) and δέλτος (déltos, writing tablet), presumed to be derived from Proto-Indo-European *delh₁- (to hew, to split). However, the ablaut forms are incompatible, and long ā can hardly be derived from PIE but Pre-Greek.
