Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

PIE word
*dwís

From δια- (dia-) + *αἰτάω (*aitáō), frequentative of αἴνυμαι (aínumai, to take); compare αἰτέω (aitéō, to ask for). Some forms are augmented after the prefix as usual, i.e. διῃ- (diēi-), but due to the obscurity of the unprefixed verb others are augmented to ἐδιαι- (ediai-), treating the prefix as part of the root. Still other forms have a double augment in ἐδιῃ- (ediēi-) or in δεδιῃ- (dediēi-) or a triple augment in ἐδεδιῃ- (edediēi-). These augments are especially frequent in the prefixed verbs ἀποδιαιτάω (apodiaitáō), ἐκδιαιτάω (ekdiaitáō), etc. (see Derived forms below).
