Etymology

[edit]

Learned borrowing from Koine Greek διασταυρῶ (diastaurô), διασταυρόω (diastauróō, to fortify with a fence) + -ώνω (-óno); by surface analysis, δια- (dia-) +‎ σταυρώνω (stavróno). The modern senses are derived via semantic loan from French croiser.[1]
