[edit]Learnedly, from Koine Greek ἐφάπτομαι, mediopassive voice of ἐφάπτω (epháptō, “touch upon”). By surface analysis, εφ- (επι-) (“on”) + the present participle of άπτομαι (áptomai, “touch”).
