Etymology

Repatriated loanword from Italian elastico (elastic (band)) with loss of initial ε (e) and consonant shift κ (k) > χ (ch), perhaps via influence from folk Tuscan dialects.[1] Doublet of ελαστικός (elastikós); see also English elastic.
