Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *melh₂-. The feminine -αινα (-aina) originates from *-ih₂; see -ια (-ia) Cognates include Sanskrit मल (mala, dirt, filth, dust), Latvian melns, Old Prussian melne and Lithuanian mėlynas (which changed the meaning to "blue").
