From Proto-Indo-European *mn̥-eh₂-sḱe-, from the root *men- with inchoative suffix -σκω (-skō). Cognates include μνάομαι (mnáomai, to be mindful), Sanskrit अम्नासिषु (amnāsiṣu), मम्नौ (mamnau).
