From Proto-Hellenic *néwos (compare Mycenaean Greek 𐀚𐀺 (ne-wo)), from Proto-Indo-European *néwos. Cognates include Old English nīwe (English new), Latin novus, Sanskrit नव (náva), and Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀‎ (nauua‎).
