Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Formation similar to μολύνω (molúnō, to stain, defile) and φορύνω (phorúnō, to be mingled). Either a direct derivative of πάλη (pálē, fine meal) +‎ -ύνω (-únō) or from an unattested u-stem from Proto-Indo-European *pel- (flour, dust).
