Etymology

    Borrowed from Italian abbate, or Middle High German abbāt, from Latin abbās (abbot), oblique stem abbat-. Further (via Ancient Greek ἀββα (abba) and Aramaic אבא) from Proto-Semitic *ʔabw-.
