From Proto-Slavic *velьb(l)ǫdъ, *vъlьb(l)ǫdъ, from Gothic 𐌿𐌻𐌱𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌿𐍃 (ulbandus). Probably further from Latin elephantus, from Ancient Greek ἐλέφας (eléphas).
