From Proto-Slavic *ganjati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰen- (“to kill”). Cognate with Albanian gjan (“I hunt”), Lithuanian giñti, Old Norse gunnr (“fight”), Latin de-fendo, Ancient Greek θείνω (theínō), Armenian գան (gan, “beating, blows”).
