From Proto-Slavic *ganjati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰen- (to kill). Cognate with Albanian gjan (I hunt), Lithuanian giñti, Old Norse gunnr (fight), Latin de-fendo, Ancient Greek θείνω (theínō), Armenian գան (gan, beating, blows).
