From the present participle гряду́щий(grjadúščij, approaching), from грясти(grjasti, to be coming, to be approaching) (грядёт(grjadjót)), from Old East Slavic грѧсти(grѧsti), from Proto-Slavic *gręsti(to go), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrHdʰ-. Cognate with Latin gradior, Sanskrit गृध्यति(gṛdhyati, to endeavour to gain, to covet), Gothic 𐌲𐍂𐌹𐌳(grid, step), English progress, congress, ingress, grade.
